Tax season can be stressful, but with a good plan, you can handle it easily. Here’s how to get through tax season in South Africa:

Know the Deadlines

You need to file your tax returns by certain dates to avoid penalties:

Individual taxpayers (non-provisional): 15 July 2024 to 21 October 2024

Provisional taxpayers: 15 July 2024 to 20 January 2025

Trusts: 16 September 2024 to 20 January 2025

Collect Your Documents

In the past, you had to submit all your financial information manually. Now, SARS (South African Revenue Service) fills in many parts of the tax return for you using data from employers, banks, medical aids, etc. You only need to submit information that SARS might not have, like:

  • Additional medical expenses not covered by medical aid
  • Income from freelance work or side businesses
  • Rental income from properties not managed by agents
  • Home office expenses
  • Foreign income or investments

Always check the pre-filled information for accuracy and add any missing details.

Know Your Deductions

You might be able to reduce your taxable income with some lesser-known deductions:

Home Office Expenses: If you work from home and have a dedicated office space, you can deduct part of your home expenses like rent, utilities, and maintenance.

Wear and Tear Allowance: You can claim for depreciation of assets like computers, office furniture, and machinery used to generate income.

Donations to Public Benefit Organizations (PBOs): Donations to registered PBOs are deductible up to 10% of your taxable income. Keep your Section 18A certificate.

Repairs and Maintenance: Deduct costs for repairs and maintenance of income-generating assets like rental properties, as long as they are not improvements.

Professional and Membership Fees: Annual fees paid to professional bodies related to your work or business are deductible.
